Cepemar Environmental Services presented in three workshops for homeowners of Deerfield Beach a proposal to reduce the amount of sand lost daily to Ocean Way Road because of the winds and also to stabilize and protect the beach from hurricanes.
The company located in Boca Raton, Florida, is specialized in the development of new sustainable technologies for the protection and improvement of the environment. The proposal responds to homeowners concerns about sand control during tropical storms.
Damages are caused particularly by tornados. The storms Francis in 2004 and Wilma in 2005 are still fresh in the community’s memory. Together, they both carried approximately 750 trucks of sand to the main streets on Deerfield Beach coast.
Cepemar suggested a plan that included the placement of native plants in stratigical sites along the beach in order to create a maintence system, naturally stabilizing the sand and allowing the creation of dunes.
Though the workshop debates it was suggested the investigation of alternative vegetation such as sea oak and railroad vines to work as natural fence. “The vegetation will reduce erosion” confirmed Chad Grecsek, former project manager of CEPEMAR Environmental Services.
